Descripción del curso

This course is designed to support sport facilities and fitness centres in creating safe, inclusive, and gender-sensitive environments that encourage women’s participation in physical activity. Despite the well-documented health benefits of regular physical activity, women continue to face multiple structural, cultural, and emotional barriers that limit their engagement in sport and exercise, particularly in gym and fitness settings. Issues related to safety, discomfort, fear of judgment, and experiences of harassment remain key factors contributing to lower participation levels among women. Drawing on recent research, a national survey of women’s experiences in sport spaces, and practical examples from fitness centres in Montenegro, the course addresses these challenges through an applied, evidence-based approach. Participants will explore how organisational culture, spatial design, staff behaviour, and institutional policies directly influence women’s feelings of safety, comfort, and belonging in sport environments. The course provides sport and fitness professionals with concrete knowledge and tools to recognise and address gender-specific barriers, promote respectful and supportive supervision, and implement clear anti-harassment policies and procedures. It also highlights effective practices, such as women-only sessions, family-inclusive approaches, and proactive communication strategies, that contribute to safer, more welcoming environments. Delivered through an asynchronous online format, the course combines theoretical insights with real-world case studies and practical resources. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to implement actionable changes within their facilities, contribute to harassment-free sport spaces, and actively support women’s confidence, autonomy, and long-term engagement in physical activity.
