Sport Nutrition

This microcredential (0.3 ECTS · 3 hours) is built for anyone who works, or wants to work, with athletes and needs a solid, up-to-date foundation in applied nutrition. The course starts from the fundamental concepts of food and nutrition and connects them, module by module, to the decisions a coach, trainer, or rehabilitation professional makes every day: which foods to recommend, how much energy an athlete needs, how to distribute carbohydrate, fat, and protein, which vitamins and minerals matter most in sport, how to plan hydration, and what the evidence says about the most common ergogenic aids (caffeine, creatine, sodium bicarbonate, nitrate).

Course description

By the end you will be able to:

  • Calculate and apply an athlete’s energy and macronutrient needs, estimating total energy expenditure and energy availability, and setting evidence-based carbohydrate, protein, and fat targets (in g/kg/day) adjusted to training volume, intensity, and phase of the season.
  • Critically evaluate food choices, dietary guidelines, and product labelling, distinguishing minimally processed foods from ultra-processed ones (NOVA), reading nutrition labels and regulated claims past their marketing framing, and applying current national and EU food-guide references rather than outdated ones.
  • Assess hydration needs and the evidence behind ergogenic aids, individualising fluid and electrolyte replacement from sweat-rate data, recognising the warning signs of low energy availability (REDs), and distinguishing the small group of supplements with solid evidence (creatine, caffeine, nitrate, beta-alanine, sodium bicarbonate) from unsupported products, including contamination/certification risk.
