Course description

The DigiSail online course provides a practical and forward-thinking approach to using gaming as a tool for sports development and engagement. Inspired by the significant rise in users of the Virtual Regatta platform during the COVID-19 pandemic, the course examines how digital environments can support the growth and visibility of sailing. Participants will gain insights into:
  • The relationship between virtual sailing and traditional sailing
  • How gaming platforms can be used to attract and engage young people
  • Strategies for using Virtual Regatta as a promotional and educational tool
  • Ways to overcome economic, geographical, and communication barriers to participation
  • Developing innovative communication approaches tailored to younger audiences
The course also provides guidance for sailing federations and clubs on how to integrate digital tools into their strategies, helping them to expand their reach, modernise their communication, and increase grassroots participation. By combining research, real-world examples, and practical recommendations, the programme supports organisations in creating new pathways into sailing and strengthening connections with future generations of athletes.
